HISTORY OF STUDYING OF MEDIEVAL TORTKULS IN SHU-TALAS REGION

This article is devoted to history of studying medieval tortkuls (fortified cities ruins) located in Southeast Kazakhstan. The exhaustive data collected by researchers about sites like tortkuls in this area since the 19-th century till today are provided. Written data of each
researcher on the area, topography, identification in written sources, functionality of each of site like tortkuls, etc. are carefully analyzed. Separately some features of characteristics of sites like tortkul in the manuscripts kept in archival funds of such researchers as F.D. Gorodetsky, B.N. Dublitsky are considered. Importance of features of the sites taken for the basis for grouping as tortkuls at D.F. Vinnik, P.P. Ivanov, A.N. Bernshtam and other research works is considered. Features of the conducted researches on tortkuls of scientists like K.M. Baipakov, M.E. Yeleuov, R. Sala and Zh-M. Deom are sorted. Also their tasks by consideration of sites of the general type like tortkuls are defined. The conclusions of researchers and interesting data according to the term of “tortkul” and on a systematization of sites like tortkuls are provided.
