Abstract

The article introduces the results of research of the Karatal complex, located in the Ulytau district of the Ulytau region, in the valley between the Karatal and Zhetykyz rivers. The complex consists of two mounds, as well as an anthropomorphic statue located next to mound no. 1 and a stele, characterized by a figurative design linked to a zoomorphic representation. Mound no. 1 contained the remains of a burial destroyed by robbers. Dating artifacts (such as arrowheads) give a spread of dates within the second half of the 1st millennium BC. The found statue shares certain features with sculptures from the Saka era. Like the stele, it could be connected with the burial mound of the Saka time. Mound no. 2, which contained no traces of burial, is attributed as a ritual structure. The historical and cultural landscape surrounding the investigated complex includes a significant number of funerary monuments – single burial mounds and burial groups of the early Iron Age. These monuments, unlike the Karatal complex, are represented only by mounds.
