Abstract

The article describes the history of the formation of the preservation of Tamgaly petroglyphs, which identifies three stages corresponding to the periods of financing of conservation work. At the first stage (1990–1993), adhesives were developed and tested on the monument, which are still used today as a binder in the preparation of artificial stone mass. At the second stage of the work (2002–2006), thanks to extensive international cooperation within the framework of UNESCO projects, a strategy for the conservation of Tamgaly petroglyphs was developed; experimental work has been carried out to test the main compositions and methods used in world practice for the conservation of petroglyphs; materials acceptable for Tamgaly have been determined. The task of the third stage (2008–2013) was the practical conservation of petroglyphs based on the results of previous stages. In the process of scientific restoration work, separate new types of documentation for conservation, new methods and technologies have been created, and conservation tactics have been determined. The third stage of the work was the final stage in the formation of the preservation of Tamgaly petroglyphs. The article contains previously unpublished additions to the field forms describing the condition of petroglyphs, a detailed description of time-tested methods, compositions and structures that can be used when performing similar work on other monuments.
